The Mancos Bluejays will venture away from home to challenge the West Grand Mustangs at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
On Friday, Mancos was fully in charge, breezing past Sargent 48-6. The Bluejays' offense checked out after the first half but had enough points banked to take the game anyway.
Mancos' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Michael Resner led the charge by rushing for 128 yards and one TD, while also throwing for 45 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Resner really tore up the turf during one magnificent 83-yard run. Another rusher making a difference was Jonah H Ritter, who rushed for 126 yards and three scores on only five carries.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Mancos was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 327 rushing yards. They are a perfect 5-0 when they've run for more than 200 yards.
Meanwhile, West Grand entered their tilt with Hayden on Friday with seven consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with eight. They enjoyed a cozy 48-32 win over the Tigers.
Mancos better keep an eye on Landon Lockhart. He was instrumental in West Grand's win, rushing for 233 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 7.8 yards per carry. Those 233 rushing yards gave Lockhart a new career-high. Jake Trail helped out on the ground, rushing for 82 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to West Grand's defensive line and their three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Trail, Drake Bustillos, and Conner Stone, who each picked up one sack apiece.
Mancos' record is now 6-3. As for West Grand, their record now sits at 8-1.
Saturday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Mancos has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 228.1 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like West Grand struggles in that department as they've been averaging 278.2 rushing yards. There's a good chance Saturday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
