League recap: Bland throws longest pass in league this season for Lee County

3A Conference 12 recap September 24, 2013

Fans got a thrill when Duane Bland and John Nguyen connected against Overhills. The connection was good for 69 yards, the longest such play in 3A Conference 12 this season.

Lee County moved up to 89 from 143 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Yellow Jackets climbed the ranks as a result of beating the Jaguars 52-12.

Don McNeill was a force in the backfield as Grays Creek fell to Triton.

Aaron Blockmon was the best receiver in the league this week as Southern Lee fell to Pinecrest. Blockmon tallied 4 receptions for 97 yards.

Bland put up the best numbers in passing as Lee County bested Overhills. He finished with 10 completions for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns.

McNeill provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Bears lost to the Hawks.

McNeill was the most successful running back in 3A Conference 12 this week. In 20 carries, he ran for 219 yards as Grays Creek fell to the Patriots. Teammate Devaughn Speed added to the ground attack by rushing for 21 yards.

Southern Lee's Emond Caldwell and Blockmon have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Caldwell has thrown for 951 yards this season, while Blockmon, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 39 catches for 887 yards. Burton Cates' team's Jerry Pullum leads the league in rushing yards with 634.

An important game coming up in the league this week will be when David Lovette's team takes on the Yellow Jackets. At the moment, the Bears are in fourth, while Lee County is in first.

The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Grays Creek takes on the Yellow Jackets. The Bears have allowed 84 points this season, while Lee County has given up 61. Grays Creek allowed 27 points last week as it lost to Triton.

Westover fell to Pine Forest 49-6 last week, the largest margin of any game. Derrick Fitts threw for 29 yards and ran for 35 yards in the loss.
