Baseball Game Preview: Russell Red Devils vs. Lawrence County Bulldogs

The Russell Red Devils will head out on the road to challenge the Lawrence County Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Russell has struggled recently with three losses in a row, while Lawrence County will arrive with three straight victories.

Last Tuesday, Russell didn't have quite enough to beat Raceland and fell 11-9. That's two games in a row now that the Red Devils have lost by exactly two runs.

Hayden McGuire put in work no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-4.

In other batting news, Kyle Mokas was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring three runs while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. He has become a key player for Russell: the team is 7-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 3-5 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Elijah Hankins, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4.

The home team had come away the winner the last four times Lawrence County and Prestonsburg had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. The Bulldogs came out on top against the Blackcats by a score of 7-4 on Wednesday.

The defeat was their first at home , dropping their record down to 10-6. As for Lawrence County, they now have a winning record of 8-7.

Russell came out on top in a nail-biter against Lawrence County when the teams last played back in March, sneaking past 6-4. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Red Devils since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
