Basketball Recap: Palo Verde Snaps Nine-Game Streak of Wins at Home

It was a good run, but Palo Verde unfortunately witnessed the end of their five-game winning streak on Monday. They fell to the Sabino Sabercats 66-62. The Titans were not able to make up for their loss to the Sabercats from their previous meeting back in January of 2024.

Several Titans players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Daniel Ortiz, who went 7 for 12 on his way to 18 points and eight rebounds. Ortiz is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 18 or more in the last four games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Rashad Ortiz, who posted 15 points and six boards.

Even though they lost, Palo Verde smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in five consecutive matchups.

Sabino got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Chris Herndon out in front who went 8 of 14 en route to 22 points. The dominant performance gave Herndon a new career-high in points. Caden Watkins was another key player, going 5 for 8 on his way to 11 points and five rebounds.

Palo Verde's defeat ended a nine-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 14-4. As for Sabino, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 13-4 record this season.

Palo Verde wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 79-43 win against Sahuarita on the 23rd. Sabino has also already played their next match, a 78-69 victory against Tanque Verde on the 22nd.
