Basketball Recap: Los Fresnos Comes Up Short

Los Fresnos lost against Veterans Memorial on January 10th and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The matchup between the Los Fresnos Falcons and the Veterans Memorial Chargers didn't end well, with the Los Fresnos Falcons falling 50-35. While losing is never fun, the Falcons can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 676th, while the Chargers are ranked 184th).

Leading Veterans Memorial to victory were Brianna Barnes and Tatiana Mercado. Barnes posted 14 points in addition to eight boards and six assists, while Mercado went 6 of 10 en route to 14 points and three steals. Mercado is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 40 games she's played dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was Alondra Ruiz, who scored four points and six rebounds.

Los Fresnos has been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 14-16 record this season. As for Veterans Memorial, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 29-6.

Los Fresnos is taking a road trip to square off against Harlingen at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Harlingen will roll in looking for their eighth straight victory, something Los Fresnos surely won't give up without a fight. Veterans Memorial has already played their next contest (against San Benito), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
