Softball Recap: Poly Prep Country Day Blue Devils vs. Hackley Hornets

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Poly Prep Country Day had no problem doing just that on Wednesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-3 win over the Hackley Hornets. That's more bragging rights for Poly Prep Country Day, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

For Hackley's part, Andrea Hegarty was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 15 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off two hits (and not a single walk). Hegarty has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't pitched less than five innings every time she's pitched this season. Hegarty was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.

Hegarty wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Ellie Firsenbaum, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

Poly Prep Country Day's victory bumped their record up to 3-1. As for Hackley, their loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 15-2.
