Football Recap: Calhoun Comes Up Short

After soaring to 34 points the game before, Calhoun was a bit more limited in their contest on Friday. They were beaten by the Wirt County Tigers 42-12. The Red Devils have struggled against the Tigers recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.

Calhoun's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Gavin Hicks, who picked up 47 receiving yards and a pair of scores. Chase Schoolcraft also helped out with an impressive 120 receiving yards.

Wirt County found their leader in sophomore Adryon Hartford, who rushed for 187 yards and one TD while picking up 10.4 yards per carry. Another signal caller making a difference was Tyler Smith, who threw for 156 yards and three touchdowns while completing 73.1% of his passes.

Calhoun now has a losing record of 1-2. As for Wirt County, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-1.

We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. Calhoun will face off against rival Wahama at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Wirt County is set to challenge their familiar foe Gilmer County at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 950 yards in their previous games.
