Basketball Recap: Newman Grove/St. Edward Comes Up Short

The Newman Grove/St. Edward Panthers lost 57-34 to the High Plains Storm on Saturday. The Panthers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

When it comes to explaining why Newman Grove/St. Edward lost, don't look at Marcos Paez. Despite the final result, he posted 11 points and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Anthony Reader, who had 12 points.

Even though they lost, Newman Grove/St. Edward smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 11 consecutive matches.

High Plains got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Carter Urkoski out in front who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 14 boards. That's the most rebounds Urkoski has posted since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Ayden Hans, who earned 12 points and four steals.

Newman Grove/St. Edward now has a losing record at 5-6. As for High Plains, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 8-3.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Newman Grove/St. Edward will host Heartland Lutheran at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for High Plains, they will welcome Palmer at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. High Plains is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 59.4 points per game this season.
