Softball Game Preview: Austin Packers vs. Mayo Spartans

The Austin Packers will head out to challenge the Mayo Spartans at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Tuesday just wasn't the day for Austin's offense. They fell just short of Century by a score of 1-0 on Tuesday. The loss continues a trend for the Packers in their meetings with the Panthers: they've now lost three in a row.

Kaydence Schaefer spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Austin saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Quinn Osgood, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base.

Meanwhile, Mayo strolled into their game last Tuesday with a perfect record and they left with the same. They never let John Marshall get on the board and left with a 4-0 victory. While the Spartans didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-13-1), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Mayo's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-0. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games. As for Austin, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-5.

Austin might still be hurting after the 15-5 loss they got from Mayo in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Packers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
