Softball Recap: Leechburg starts season with defeat on the road

Softball Recap: Leechburg Blue Devils vs. Jeannette Jayhawks

Leechburg kicked off their season on the road on Wednesday and hit a couple of potholes. They fell 5-2 to the Jeannette Jayhawks. Leechburg was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Jeannette apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in April of 2023.

For Jeannette's part, Grace Stein made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 17 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits (and not a single walk). Stein has been consistent recently: she hasn't pitched less than five innings every time she's pitched this season. Stein was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with an RBI.

In other batting news, Abby Shaw was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing three bases while going 2-for-3. Shaw is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: she's stolen at least one every time she's taken the field this season. Another player making a difference was Gianna Casino, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

The win was the third in a row for Jeannette, bringing their record for this year to 3-1.

Leechburg will be playing in front of their home fans against Springdale at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Jeannette, they will head out on the road to take on Monessen at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Jeannette is strutting in with some hitting muscle, as they've averaged 6.8 runs per game this season.
