Softball Recap: Leyden's Losing Streak Snapped at Five Games

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Leyden ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They skirted past the Downers Grove South Mustangs 4-3. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Eagles as it put an end to their five-game losing streak.

Arianna Gallo spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on six hits.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Carmen Richardson, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. That triple was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Elise Bertsche, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Leyden kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are 5-1 when they post 11 or more hits.

Leyden's win bumped their record up to 10-13. As for Downers Grove South, their loss was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 10-12.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Leyden will head out to square off against Berwyn/Cicero Morton at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Downers Grove South, they will venture away from home to take on Plainfield East at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Mustangs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Bengals have averaged an impressive 6.7 runs per game this season.
