Basketball Recap: Cheyenne Desert Shields vs. Legacy Longhorns

Cheyenne lost against Legacy back in December of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Cheyenne Desert Shields took a blow against the Legacy Longhorns, falling 71-18. While losing is never fun, the Desert Shields can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nevada basketball rankings (they are ranked 76th, while the Longhorns are ranked 13th).

Despite the loss, Cheyenne still got an impressive performance from Melanoreen Pancho, who posted five points.

Legacy had a senior duo take command as Laila Gines went 7 of 11 on her way to 17 points in addition to six steals and five rebounds and Alabama Nieves went 7 for 13 en route to 16 points along with five assists and five boards. That's the most assists Nieves has posted since back in January of 2024. Another player making a difference was Shalena Mesiona, who went 5 of 7 on her way to 10 points.

This is the second loss in a row for Cheyenne and nudges their season record down to 3-7. As for Legacy, the victory was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 17-6.

Cheyenne has already played their next matchup (against Eldorado), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Legacy will square off against Somerset Academy Losee at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Legacy knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past six games -- so hopefully Somerset Academy Losee likes a good challenge.
