Baseball Recap: Wellsville-Middletown Comes Up Short

Wellsville-Middletown extended their losing streak to six on Monday, dropping their season record down to 1-13 in the process. They came up short against the Silex Owls, falling 15-0. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Tigers of the 16-2 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

As for Silex, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-5 record this season. The result was nothing new for Silex, who have now won six matches by nine runs or more so far this season.

For Silex's part, Chase Vehige and Joe Dameron were major factors no matter where they played. On the mound, Vehige struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Dameron tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. That's the most strikeouts Vehige has posted since back in March. At the plate, Vehige got on base in two of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI, while Dameron got on base in both of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run. Dameron is becoming a predictor of Silex's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 4-5 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, Jack Johnson was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Silex: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 4-5 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Ethan Beagle, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Looking ahead, Wellsville-Middletown will challenge Missouri Military Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Silex, they will square off against Paris at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Coyotes have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.86 runs per game on average), something the Owls will no doubt try to take advantage of.
