Basketball Recap: Sierra Vista Victorious

Sierra Vista posted their closest victory since January 12, 2024 on Saturday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Elko Indians, sneaking past 46-44. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Mountain Lions.

Donnayja Gibson was her usual excellent self, going 11 of 16 on her way to 25 points along with six rebounds and four steals. That makes it seven consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Sierra Vista's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Avery Silvas, who posted ten points in addition to five assists and five boards.

Sierra Vista smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in three consecutive matchups.

When it comes to explaining why Elko lost, don't look at Jessica Vera. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 19 points and 16 boards. Vera is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last eight games she's played. Another player making a difference was Julyssa Rivera, who had seven points and 12 rebounds.

Sierra Vista is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 9-6 record this season. As for Elko, their loss dropped their record down to 5-5.

Sierra Vista didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 56-44 win against Rancho on the 7th. As for Elko, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 41-34 defeat against Churchill County on the 3rd.
