Varela had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They pulled ahead with a 13-12 photo finish over the Dr. Krop Lightning on Monday. Winning may never get old, but the Vipers sure are getting used to it with their eighth in a row.

Varela found their leader in freshman Angelyn Molina, who threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns while completing 72.2% of her passes. Molina's passing game has become a key predictor of the Vipers' success: the team is undefeated when her passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 2-3 otherwise.

Varela didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Kaylee Guedes and Chloe Campos.

Varela pushed their record up to 9-3 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 2.4 points on average over those games. As for Dr. Krop, the defeat snapped their winning streak at four games and leaves them with a 9-4 record.

Looking ahead, Varela will take on Homestead at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few points on average (the Vipers 4.1, the Broncos 5.3) so any points scored will be well earned. Dr. Krop does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
