Softball Recap: Westhill Comes Up Short

Westhill had lost five straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 0-4 to make it six. They came up short against the Ridgefield Tigers, falling 12-6. On the bright side, the six- run effort marked the Vikings' highest-scoring match to date.

As for Ridgefield, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 3-4. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games.

For Ridgefield's part, Caitlin McGratty spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and one unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up 11 Ks. Those 11 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for McGratty.

On the hitting side, Ridgefield let Grace Couch and Sonia Gaughran run wild. Couch got on base in four of her five plate appearances with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base, while Gaughran went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. That stolen base marked the first that Gaughran has snagged this season. Sophia Cappiello was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
