Preview: Weldon Chargers vs. Southeast Halifax Trojans
Weldon has been on the road for two straight, but on Tuesday they'll finally head home. They will take on the Southeast Halifax Trojans at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Friday, Weldon beat Warren County 49-40.
Weldon's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Kamya Coles, who scored 23 points along with four steals. Another player making a difference was Shaelyn Johnson, who almost dropped a triple-double on nine points, nine rebounds, and 12 steals.
Meanwhile, Southeast Halifax had to endure a six-game losing streak dating back to last season, but that streak is no more. They were the clear victor by a 60-34 margin over KIPP P. Southeast Halifax's offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.
Southeast Halifax got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Janiyla Pierce out in front who dropped a double-double on 20 points and 12 rebounds. That makes it three consecutive games in which Pierce has scored at least 25% of Southeast Halifax's points. Kemorriya Evans was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on ten points and ten rebounds.
Weldon now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Southeast Halifax, their victory ended a three-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 1-4.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Weldon have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 38 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Southeast Halifax struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 27.4 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Weldon came out on top in a nail-biter against Southeast Halifax in their previous matchup back in January, sneaking past 44-42. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Southeast Halifax's Ortasia Parker, who scored 16 points along with three steals. Now that she won't be playing on Tuesday, will it be that much easier for Weldon to walk away with another win? There's only one way to find out.
