New London (Conn.) captured the lead in the fourth quarter and held on for a 9-7 victory over
Norwich Free Academy (Norwich, Conn.) on Saturday. The Whalers took the lead for good when
Garrett Burdick kicked a field goal.
The teams went into the locker room at halftime deadlocked at zero. The Whalers took the lead indefinitely on a field goal by Burdick in the fourth quarter.
The loss came as a shock for the Wildcats, who entered the game ranked No. 9 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for Connecticut, while New London was ranked No. 46. Norwich Free Academy came into the game having won one of the past seven games between the two teams.
Norwich Free Academy's only touchdown came on a run by
Khaleed Exum-Strong in the third quarter.
NL came in allowing an average of 20.8 points per game this season. The defense really stepped up, holding NFA well below its season average of 27.3 points scored per game.
The loss comes after Norwich Free Academy defeated Stonington 63-35 last week.
