Basketball Recap: Riley County Makes It Six in a Row on the Road

Riley County posted their closest victory since December 21, 2023 on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Hiawatha Red Hawks 32-30. The victory almost wasn't to be: the Falcons were down 22-8 in the second quarter.

Hiawatha lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Alija Contreras, who posted 13 points. Another player making a difference was Kylie Nelson, who earned eight points.

Riley County's win was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-3. The wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 26.2 points over those games. As for Hiawatha, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 8-6.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Riley County will welcome Wabaunsee on Tuesday. Wabaunsee will roll in looking for their tenth straight victory, something Riley County surely won't give up without a fight. As for Hiawatha, they will be playing at home against Holton at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
