Baseball Recap: Shawnee Drops Season-High Score on Piqua

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Shawnee). They put the hurt on Piqua with a sharp 14-7 victory on Monday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for Shawnee considering their two-run performance the game before.

Shawnee got a great performance from Bryce Windau as he struck out eight batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Those eight strikeouts gave Windau a new career-high.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Tate Bender, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Cole Sunderland was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs, two RBI, and one double.

Shawnee pushed their record up to 5-16 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.7 runs on average over those games. As for Piqua, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 10-11 record this season.

Shawnee and Piqua could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Ohio Rankings. The Indians (ranked 493rd) will meet Defiance (ranked ninth) at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Piqua will take on Kenton Ridge at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank disadvantage (296 vs. 30).
