Recap: Newton-Conover Red Devils vs. Maiden Blue Devils

If the Newton-Conover Red Devils were riding high off their 56-31 takedown of the Bunker Hill Bears last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Newton-Conover lost to Maiden on the road by a decisive 57-43 margin on Tuesday. Newton-Conover was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Maiden apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2023.

Newton-Conover's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sara Sain, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten rebounds. Sain has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last three times she's played. Hadleigh Swagger was another key contributor, scoring 18 points.

Maiden's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Khiara Culliver, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and ten rebounds. Culliver hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for seven straight games. Another player making a difference was Willow Bass, who scored 15 points along with three steals.

Newton-Conover has been struggling recently, as they've lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-13 record this season. As for Maiden, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 9-7.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Newton-Conover will take on West Caldwell at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. West Caldwell is on an eight-game streak of home losses, Newton-Conover a four-game streak of away losses, but someone's luck is about to change. As for Maiden, they will head out on the road to square off against East Burke at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in East Burke's favor is that they have posted big point totals every time they've taken the court this season.
