Odyssey Institute gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Friday. They never let the Tonopah Valley Phoenix get on the board and left with a 25-0 victory. The Minotaur were shut out 39-0 the last time they took on the Phoenix, so the Minotaur were just returning the favor.
A big part of Odyssey Institute's win came down to the chemistry between Logan Stanton and his top target Angelo Avina. Stanton threw for 191 yards and one touchdown on only 17 passes while Avina picked up 101 receiving yards and one score. An impressive showing, but Avina really ramped things up playing D: he made four total tackles (2.0 for loss) and defended one pass in addition to snagging two interceptions.
On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Odyssey Institute's defense and their three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Isaiah Montoya, Aaron Ruano, and Kaeden Sabatina, who each picked up one sack apiece. Odyssey Institute received some extra help from Cory Hernandez, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.
Looking ahead, Odyssey Institute will hit the road for the first time this season to square off against Winslow at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Tonopah Valley, they will host Scottsdale Christian Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
