Softball Recap: Northwestern Beats Cumberland for Their Ninth Straight Win

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Northwestern). Everything went their way against the Cumberland Beavers on Tuesday as they made off with an 18-4 win. The Tigers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven games by seven runs or more this season.

Ellie Peterson made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

In other batting news, Ashlyn Sutherland was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Emma Wennersten, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI.

The victory (which was Northwestern's ninth in a row) raised their record to 13-2. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.1 runs on average over those games. As for Cumberland, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-10-1.

Coming up, Northwestern is taking a road trip to square off against Ladysmith at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Tigers are facing the Lumberjacks at the right time seeing as the Lumberjacks are stuck on a 14-game losing streak. As for Cumberland, they will host Spooner at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
