The West Shamokin Wolves will head out to challenge the River Valley Panthers at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. West Shamokin is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.6 runs per game this season.
Homer-Center hit West Shamokin with a 12-run seventh inning on Thursday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Wolves took a 15-10 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Wildcats.
Ben McConnell and Braden Talmadge stepped up to the plate in a big way. McConnell went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double, while Talmadge went 3-for-5 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was Gunnar Shoop, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI.
Meanwhile, after only two runs in their last matchup, River Valley made sure to put some runs up on the board against Penns Manor on Friday. The Panthers were the clear victors by a 10-3 margin over the Comets. The game marked the Panthers' most dominant victory of the season.
Gavin Burkhart and Chase Stuchal made a splash no matter where they played. Throwing, Burkhart tossed three innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Meanwhile, Stuchal tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. At bat, Burkhart went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Stuchal went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. That's the most RBI Stuchal has posted since back in May of 2024.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sammy Yanits, who went 1-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March. Austin Baker also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
River Valley always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .571. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
River Valley is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-11 record this season. As for West Shamokin, their loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-5.
West Shamokin might still be hurting after the 9-3 defeat they got from River Valley when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Wolves avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
