Basketball Recap: Philip Prather's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Jefferson over Weslaco

Jefferson extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 12 on Friday, dropping them down to 0-11. They were two points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 40-38 heartbreaker at the hands of the Weslaco Panthers. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Mustangs of the 46-43 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in November of 2024.

Several Mustangs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Philip Prather, who shot 70% from the field on his way to 14 points. Prather has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last four times he's played. Calvin Howard was another key player, putting up seven points.

As for Weslaco, their win bumped their record up to 8-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory they have posted since February 7th.

Weslaco's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kai L Fino led the charge by going 8-for-12 en route to 17 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Michael Fuentes, who posted nine points.

Jefferson has already played their next matchup, a 61-30 win against Eagle Pass on the 5th. As for Weslaco, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 50-35 loss against Bridgeland on the 5th.
