Wakefield is 0-10 against Millbrook since December of 2018 but things could change on Wednesday. The Wakefield Wolverines will venture away from home to challenge the Millbrook Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. Wakefield is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 57.1 points per game this season.
Wakefield is headed into the matchup having just posted their biggest victory since December 12, 2023 on Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Wake Forest 78-50. Given the Wolverines' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 135th, while the Cougars are ranked 305th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Wakefield's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Avery Hicks led the charge by going 5 of 6 en route to 16 points and five boards. Hicks is trending in the right direction considering he's improved his point production for five straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Bishop Dudley, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and nine assists.
Meanwhile, Millbrook entered their tilt with Rolesville on Friday with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Rams 63-61. That's two games straight that the Wildcats have won by exactly two points.
Wakefield better keep an eye on Ashton King. He was instrumental in Millbrook's win, going 10 for 16 on his way to 36 points and eight rebounds. King's evening made it four games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Joshua Bowen, who posted seven points.
Wakefield's victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-6. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.4 points per game. As for Millbrook, their record is now 7-9.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Wakefield has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 30.9 boards per game. However, it's not like Millbrook struggles in that department as they've been averaging 31.2 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Wakefield came up short against Millbrook in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, falling 60-53. Can Wakefield avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
