Baseball Recap: South Point Triumphs

South Point proved they can win big last Monday (they won by six) and on Monday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-2 win over the Ironton Fighting Tigers. This was a revenge game for the Pointers: when they faced off against the Fighting Tigers back in April, they had to take a 9-0 loss.

South Point's victory was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Ethan Layne, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. The Pointers are 2-1 when Layne posts two or more stolen bases, but 4-6 otherwise. Ryder Pratt also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.

South Point's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-7. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Ironton, their defeat ended a six-game streak of away wins and brought them to 12-2.

When South Point and Ironton next hit the field, they'll be up against teams who recently just can't seem to lose. The Pointers will try to stop Russell's three-game winning streak when they meet at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Ironton will face off against Portsmouth and their eight-game winning streak at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Fighting Tigers 2.5, the Trojans 3.9) so any runs scored will be well earned.
