Basketball Recap: Jake Mercer's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Perry County over Wayne County

Perry County fought the good fight in their overtime contest against Wayne County on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell 56-45 to the Wayne County Wildcats. While losing is never fun, the Vikings can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Tennessee basketball rankings (they are ranked 299th, while the Wildcats are ranked 145th).

Several Vikings players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jake Mercer, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten boards. The dominant performance gave Mercer a new career-high in rebounds. Another player making a difference was Colton Pevahouse, who posted 12 points and seven boards.

Wayne County's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Cayman Camfield, who scored ten points in addition to six rebounds and four steals. Justice Bell was another key player, putting up 13 points along with six assists and five boards.

Perry County's loss dropped their record down to 9-14. As for Wayne County, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 18-7.

Coming up, Perry County will take on McEwen at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Wayne County, a feisty cat fight will be fought when the Wildcats face off against the Lions at 6:00 p.m. on Monday.
