Basketball Game Preview: Layton Lancers vs. Murray Spartans

The Layton Lancers and the Murray Spartans will round out the year against one another at at 11:30 a.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both will really light up the scoreboard.

Layton is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They took their game on Thursday with ease, bagging an 88-43 win over Taylorsville. The Lancers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won four contests by 34 points or more this season.

Meanwhile, Murray was just a bucket shy of victory on Thursday and fell 56-55 to Cottonwood. The Spartans have struggled against the Colts recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.

Loss or not, Murray got some senior leadership from Treyce Wilson and Damani Wilkerson. Wilson went 7 for 13 on his way to 16 points and three steals, while Wilkerson went 7 of 11 on his way to 19 points and six rebounds. Wilkerson continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Ethan Davies, who posted five points and five rebounds.

Murray's defeat dropped their record down to 5-4. As for Layton, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-1.

Layton barely slipped by Murray in their previous meeting back in December of 2023, winning 57-56. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Wilson, who went 7 of 11 on his way to 19 points and five assists.
