League recap: Weld Central bests Alameda in blowout

3A Metro - East recap Oct. 3, 2012

Weld Central took down Alameda 31-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Brandon Blackston threw for 16 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 26 yards in the win.

The Rebels led 3A Metro - East in scoring this week after putting up 31 points on the Pirates. Blackston in the win.

George Lara provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Skyview lost to Mead. He completed nine passes for 169 yards and also ran for 15 yards. Lara's favorite target this week was Dominque Brown, who caught two passes for 87 yards.

Cody Bowen was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 106 yards on 13 carries as Weld Central fell to the Maverick. Teammate Carson DeGroot added to the ground attack by rushing for 101 yards.

Vista PEAK Prep's Adam Puehler and DJ Ortiz have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Puehler has thrown for 802 yards this season, while Ortiz, a 6-foot-3 receiver, has 28 catches for 342 yards. Mike Brown's team's DeGroot leads the league in rushing yards with 264.

A big matchup in 3A Metro - East this week will be when Elizabeth takes on the Bison. The Cardinals are in second place, while Vista PEAK Prep is in fourth place.

The Rebels made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 11,109 from 12,441. The improvement came about via a 31-0 victory over Alameda last week.
