Baseball Game Preview: Spurger Pirates vs. Deweyville Pirates

Spurger hasn't had much luck against Deweyville recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. Spurger will head out to challenge Deweyville at 5:00 p.m.

Spurger fell victim to Evadale and their airtight pitching crew on Friday. They lost 9-0 to the Rebels. The contest marked the first time this year in which the Pirates were not able to get on the board.

The home team had won the previous four meetings between Deweyville and Hull-Daisetta, and Deweyville kept the tradition alive. The Pirates' pitcher stepped up to hand the Bobcats a 15-0 shutout on Friday. The win continues a trend for the Pirates in their matchups with the Bobcats: they've now won seven in a row.

Lane Gray was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Gray was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring four runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. He also brought in an RBI, marking his first of the season.

In other batting news, Gunner Evans was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-4. He also put up two doubles, which were his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Slade Gunter, who scored a run while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.

Deweyville always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .690. The last time their OBP was this high was was before the start of last season.

Deweyville's record now sits at 4-13. As for Spurger, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-3.

Spurger suffered a grim 18-4 defeat to Deweyville in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. Can Spurger avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
