Basketball Game Preview: Coronado Mustangs vs. Monterey Plainsmen

Coronado is 0-10 against Monterey since January of 2021 but things could change on Tuesday. The Coronado Mustangs will head out on the road to challenge the Monterey Plainsmen at 6:00 p.m. Both are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.

Monterey is hoping to do what Tascosa couldn't on Friday: put an end to Coronado's winning streak, which now stands at three games. Coronado breezed by Tascosa to the tune of 65-27. The win was all the more spectacular given the Mustangs' disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 494th, while the Rebels are ranked ninth).

Meanwhile, Monterey took their game on Friday with ease, bagging an 89-37 victory over Palo Duro. The Plainsmen have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 17 contests by 20 points or more this season.

Coronado better keep an eye on Aaliyah Chavez. She was instrumental in Monterey's win, dropping a double-double on 36 points and 13 boards. The match was Chavez's 27th in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Ambrosia Cole, who went 7 of 17 on her way to 22 points and five rebounds.

Monterey smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in seven consecutive games.

Monterey's win was their 14th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 24-4. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 38.3 points. As for Coronado, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a massive bump to their 10-15 record this season.

Coronado took a serious blow against Monterey in their previous matchup back in November of 2024, falling 93-32. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Chavez, who almost dropped a double-double on 38 points and nine rebounds. Now that Coronado knows the damage she can cause, will they be able to stop her this time? There's only one way to find out.
