Softball Recap: Wirt County's Victory on Thursday Extends Winning Streak to Two

Wirt County and Calhoun pushed the score to 12-11 the last time they played Calhoun, but on Thursday defenses reigned supreme. The Tigers' pitcher stepped up to hand the Red Devils a 2-0 shutout. This was a revenge game for the Tigers: when they faced off against the Red Devils on April 9th, they had to take a 12-11 defeat.

Adi Smith made a splash while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 16 over seven innings pitched. Those 16 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run.

Smith wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Kylee Ross, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run. Ross has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played.

The win made it two in a row for Wirt County and bumps their season record up to 5-11. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 6-11 Calhoun and 8-12 Tyler. As for Calhoun, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 6-11.

Looking ahead, Wirt County will host Tyler at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Calhoun, they will face off against Braxton County at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The Red Devils are facing the Eagles at the right time seeing as the Eagles are stuck on a 17-game losing streak.
