Preview: Mauldin Mavericks vs. Woodmont Wildcats

Mauldin is 8-2 against Woodmont since January of 2017, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Mauldin Mavericks will head out on the road to face off against the Woodmont Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. Mauldin knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past six matches -- so hopefully Woodmont likes a good challenge.

You can't lose the matchup if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Mauldin's strategy against Hillcrest on Tuesday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that Mauldin blew Hillcrest out of the water with a 90-63 final score. Given Mauldin's advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 37th, while Hillcrest is ranked 131st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

It was another big night for Braden Hershberger, who almost dropped a double-double on 26 points and nine rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points he has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Nathan Wilbourne, who scored 16 points along with seven rebounds.

Meanwhile, Woodmont came up short against T.L. Hanna on Tuesday and fell 59-52. Woodmont has struggled against T.L. Hanna recently, as their contest on Tuesday was their third consecutive lost matchup.

Mauldin's win bumped their record up to 13-10. As for Woodmont, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 15-10 record this season.

Mauldin didn't have too much breathing room in their matchup against Woodmont when the teams last played back in January, but they still walked away with a 58-54 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Mauldin since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
