Bishop Gorman is a perfect 6-0 against Legacy since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Gaels will host the Longhorns at 4:00 p.m. Bishop Gorman is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
Bishop Gorman is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Nevada's top teams: Coronado, who was ranked 24th at the time (Bishop Gorman was ranked third). The Gaels came up short against the Cougars on Wednesday, falling 9-2. The Gaels' loss signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.
Bishop Gorman got a good showing from Avi Garg, who pitched 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. That's the fewest earned runs Garg has allowed since back in April.
On the hitting side, Bishop Gorman saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Justin Rodrigues, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one RBI. Another was Austin Arteaga, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Legacy won against Cheyenne on Monday with 11 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Wednesday. The Longhorns were the clear victors by an 11-1 margin over the Desert Shields. The Longhorns haven't had any issues with the Desert Shields recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.
Ernie Rios tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run while striking out seven over five innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Legacy is 5-2 when he allows at most one earned run, but 6-11 otherwise.
At the plate, Legacy let Easton Lake and Kyler Avila run wild. Lake went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double, while Avila went a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, one triple, and one double. Lake has become a key player for Legacy: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 3-13 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of William Glover, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Legacy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .440. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Cheyenne only posted a batting average of .176.
Bishop Gorman's defeat dropped their record down to 18-11. As for Legacy, their win bumped their record up to 11-13.
Bishop Gorman took their victory against Legacy in their previous meeting back in April of 2019 by a conclusive 10-0 score. Do the Gaels have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Longhorns turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
