Basketball Recap: Sabinal Takes a Loss

Sabinal suffered their biggest defeat since February 20th on Saturday. They lost 69-46 to the Utopia Buffaloes. While losing is never fun, the Yellowjackets can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1236th, while the Buffaloes are ranked 553rd).

Taylor Wiekamp was his usual excellent self, putting up 20 points in addition to eight assists and eight boards for Utopia. That's the most assists Wiekamp has posted since back in January. The team also got some help courtesy of Charlie Leman, who posted 13 points and three blocks.

Sabinal moved to 6-6 with that loss, which also ended their three-game winning streak. As for Utopia, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 14-2.

Sabinal didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 62-37 defeat against San Antonio S.T.E.A.M. Academy on the 14th. Utopia will take on Nueces Canyon in a holiday battle at at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The timing is sure in Utopia's favor as the squad sits on three straight wins at home while Nueces Canyon has been banged up by four consecutive losses on the road.
