Basketball Recap: Kamryn Bragg's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Sweeny over Wharton

Sweeny was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their sixth straight defeat. They were five points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 44-39 heartbreaker at the hands of the Wharton Tigers. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Bulldogs this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 41-29 back in December of 2024.

Sweeny lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Kamryn Bragg, who posted eight points in addition to eight rebounds and seven blocks. What's more, Bragg also racked up two steals, the most she's had since back in January of 2024. Another player making a difference was Daija Stubblefield, who had ten points and six boards.

Even though they lost, Sweeny smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive board total in three consecutive contests.

Sweeny's loss dropped their record down to 5-16. As for Wharton, their win bumped their record up to 8-17.

Sweeny will look to defend their home court on Friday against Needville at 7:00 p.m. Sweeny is facing Needville at the right time seeing as Needville is stuck on a 12-game losing streak. Wharton has already played their next match (against El Campo), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
