The Newfound Regional Bears will take on the Derryfield Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Newfound Regional is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.5 runs per game this season.
Newfound Regional barely beat Hillsboro-Deering the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Bears put the hurt on the Hillcats with a sharp 13-3 victory on Monday. The win continues a trend for the Bears in their matchups with the Hillcats: they've now won three in a row.
Gavin Royea was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over five innings while giving up three earned runs off four hits (and not a single walk). Royea was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. Royea is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: he's snagged at least one every time he's taken the field this season.
In other batting news, Ryder Sargent was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with four stolen bases and three runs. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Abe Furtado was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and one double.
Newfound Regional always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .588. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hillsboro-Deering only posted an OBP of .300.
Meanwhile, Derryfield faced Belmont in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Monday. The Cougars fell just short of the Red Raiders by a score of 4-3. The Cougars' loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.
Keith Townsend made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with two doubles and one run. Another player making a difference was Casey Peters, who went 2-for-4 with one run.
The victory got Newfound Regional back to even at 2-2. As for Derryfield, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-3.
Both the two teams just can't seem to miss. Newfound Regional has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.8 hits per game. However, it's not like Derryfield struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 2.8 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
