Basketball Game Preview: Altavista Colonels vs. Dan River Wildcats

The Altavista Colonels will square off against the Dan River Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Altavista took a loss when they played away from home on Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Saturday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Rustburg, sneaking past 63-60. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Colonels have posted against the Red Devils since December 18, 2019.

Meanwhile, Dan River entered their tilt with Tunstall on Monday with six consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with seven. They came out on top against the Trojans by a score of 79-70. Given the Wildcats' advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 111th, while the Trojans are ranked 269th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Dan River's victory was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-4. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 71.1 points per game. As for Altavista, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 10-7 record this season.

Altavista came out on top in a nail-biter against Dan River in their previous matchup back in January of 2024, sneaking past 76-73. Will Altavista repeat their success, or does Dan River have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
