Baseball Recap: Monticello Takes a Loss

Monticello dropped their record down to 12-13 on Thursday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins. They fell just short of the Warren Lumberjacks by a score of 6-5. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Lumberjacks this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 2-1 on April 8th.

Laytn Nichols was cooking despite his team's loss, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two doubles. Monticello is 2-1 when Nichols posts two or more runs, but 10-12 otherwise.

As for Warren, their victory was their 11th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 15-5. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games.

On Warren's side, Ryan Spears made a splash while hitting and pitching. He tossed 5.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. What's more, Spears posted five strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Antonio Jordan, who went 2-for-4 with one triple and two RBI. That triple marked the first that he has hit this season. Another player making a difference was Nathan Spears, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Looking ahead, Monticello will host El Dorado at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Warren, they will head out to square off against Hamburg at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
