The race for the top spot is tight, and the contenders for the title go all the way down to 3A.

Timpview and Bingham are the most dominant programs in Utah since MaxPreps became America's source for high school sports. And it was close.

While Bingham was busy handling business in 5A reaching seven title games since 2006, Timpview was doing much of the same in 6A by reaching eight final contests. And that just about sums up how the Thunderbirds gained the edge.

Higher divisions may hold the top spots but there is hardly a lack of smaller schools on our list. Juan Diego Catholic comes in at No. 7 with a handful of 3A title game appearances. And Hurricane, located in the southern part of the state, can say the same at No. 14.

Here is how the points break down:

1. 20 for a state title

2. 10 for a state championship game appearance

3. Other points are based on where a team finished in the final MaxPreps Utah Football Computer Rankings presented by the Army National Guard. For example, if a team finished No. 1 overall, it would receive 25 points. If it finished 25th overall, the team would get one point. No points are awarded if the team did not finish in the Top 25.
