The Helix Highlanders are taking a road trip to square off against the Grossmont Foothillers at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Helix is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.6 runs per game this season.
Helix will roll into the game after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up one run on Thursday, then bounced right back against Mount Miguel on Friday. The Highlanders were the clear victors by a 19-0 margin over the Matadors. The Highlanders might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight contests by six runs or more this season.
Katelyn Woodland tossed a big game, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 11 over five innings pitched.
At the plate, Helix let Lauren Farace and LaNiah Broom run wild. Farace went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Broom went 2-for-3 with three runs, one double, and one RBI. That's the most hits Broom has posted since back in February. Marley Johnson also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.
Helix kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are a perfect 10-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, Grossmont didn't have quite enough to beat El Capitan on Monday and fell 6-4. The Foothillers have struggled against the Vaqueros recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive lost meeting.
Grossmont saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Nakhia Lee, who went 2-for-3 with two runs.
Helix has been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-5 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.6 runs over those games. As for Grossmont, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-14-1.
Both Helix and Grossmont just can't seem to miss. The Highlanders have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.7 hits per game. However, it's not like Grossmont struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 5.4 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Helix came up short against Grossmont in their previous matchup back in May of 2023, falling 7-3. Can the Highlanders avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
