Preview: Vail Christian Saints vs. Dove Creek Bulldogs
The Vail Christian Saints will head out on the road to face off against the Dove Creek Bulldogs at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Last Friday, everything came up roses for Vail Christian on the road against Rangely as the squad secured a 60-8 win. The win was just what Vail Christian needed coming off of a 44-14 defeat in their prior contest.
Vail Christian found their leader in underclassman Asher Morris, who rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown on only five carries, and also threw for 118 yards and four touchdowns. Owen Koontz also deserves a shout-out for his two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Dove Creek humbled Sargent with a 50-8 victory. Given Dove Creek's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado football rankings (they are ranked ninth, while Sargent is ranked 45th), the result on Friday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Gage Buffington continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 51 yards and two touchdowns on only six carries, while also picking up 60 receiving yards. Buffington was no stranger to the big play, cutting upfield for a catch that went for 60 yards.
Another reason for the win was Dove Creek's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for nine sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Trevan Ivie and Nic Aragon who racked up five sacks between them.
Their wins bumped Vail Christian to 6-3 and Dove Creek to 7-2.
Vail Christian was taken down by Dove Creek 52-20 in their previous matchup back in October of 2020. Can Vail Christian avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
