Softball Recap: Sterling Victorious

Sterling proved they can win big last Tuesday (they won by eight) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They skirted past the Rock Island Rocks 5-4. The victory continues a trend for the Golden Warriors in their matchups with the Rocks: they've now won five in a row.

Lily Martinez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on 12 hits.

At the plate, Marley Sechrest was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Mya Lira, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4.

Sterling's win bumped their record up to 7-2. As for Rock Island, their loss dropped their record down to 4-3.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sterling will face off against DeKalb at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Barbs have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.5 runs per game on average), something the Golden Warriors will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Rock Island, they will square off against Biggsville West Central at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
