Green Hope has strong Fall Sports season, edges North Allegheny for top spot.
Although Green Hope (Cary, N.C.) has been open just 20 years, it has quickly become a powerhouse athletic program in North Carolina and it has climbed to the No. 1 spot in the MaxPreps Cup Fall Rankings for the second straight year.
With state titles in girls tennis, boys soccer and girls volleyball, and a runner-up finish in boys cross country, Green Hope has scored 1,032 points, according to the MaxPreps Cup formula, to edge No. 2 North Allegheny (Pa.) by over 60 points.
According to Green Hope athletic director Colin Fegeley, the school benefits from three key groups.
"We have some tremendous coaches, dedicated athletes and a very supportive administration," said Fegeley. "It certainly helps to have some incredibly talented athletes, but I like to look at it as a whole picture and I think that's why we have been so successful."
One of those tremendous athletes would be Jordyn Adams, a two-sport athlete who was drafted in the first round of the 2018 MLB draft by the Angels. Adams was part of Green Hope's No. 12 overall finish in the MaxPreps Cup final rankings in 2018.
Fegeley notes that Green Hope has been particularly successful the past 10 years, winning nine NCHSAA 4A Wells Fargo Cups, recognizing the top athletic program in Class 4A in North Carolina, as well as 16 state titles over the past five years.
"We have done a great job of retaining our coaches and that has been a big part of our success," said Fegeley. "The future is bright. I have total confidence in our coaches, student athletes and community to maintain this level of success."
North Allegheny comes in at No. 2 with 970 points, winning state tittles in boys and girls cross country, girls golf and girls volleyball.
Oviedo is off to a tremendous start as well, coming in with 948 points and three state titles. Oviedo won boys bowling, boys swimming and girls volleyball and finished girls swimming.
Indiana powerhouse Carmel is No. 4 with 933 points while Lone Peak (Utah) is No. 5 with 887 points.
The MaxPreps Cup attempts to determine the No. 1 overall high school sports program in the nation based on points awarded in five categories: 1. size of state, 2. popularity of sport, 3. enrollment level of school, 4. number of teams competing in the enrollment division, and 5. placement in national rankings by sport.
