Baseball Recap: Altoona Comes Up Short

Altoona fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Cedar Cliff on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Colts by a score of 2-1. The Mountain Lions have struggled against the Colts recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive lost meeting.

Leyland Baer was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he didn't allow a single earned run over 6.1 innings pitched.

At the plate, Altoona saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Aaron Smearman, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with one triple and one run.

Altoona's loss dropped their record down to 9-8. As for Cedar Cliff, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 11-5.

Coming up, Altoona will be playing in front of their home fans against DuBois at 4:15 p.m. on Friday. The Beavers' pitching crew has only allowed 3.4 runs per game this season, so the Mountain Lions' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Cedar Cliff, they will head out on the road to challenge Mifflin County at 4:15 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Colts 3, the Huskies 2.3) so any runs scored will be well earned.
