Softball Recap: Glenwood Takes Down Mattoon in a Playoff Battle

With a playoff win on the line, Glenwood rose to the challenge on Friday. They were the clear victors by a 9-2 margin over the Mattoon Greenwave. The victory was familiar territory for the Titans, who have now won 23 matchups in a row.

Irie Lohrenz spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on four hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up a single earned run in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Glenwood got a big performance out of Hope Gilmore, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Ava Bobb, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double.

Glenwood pushed their record up to 32-1 with the win, which was their 18th straight at home dating back to last season. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.6 runs over those games. As for Mattoon, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 13-19 record this season.

Glenwood does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Mattoon, they will face off against Varsity Opponent at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Varsity Opponent has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.84 runs per game on average), something Mattoon will no doubt try to take advantage of.
