Baseball Recap: Otis Starts Season with Victory at Home

Otis took care of business in their home opener (and then some) on Tuesday. They blew past the Kiowa Indians 11-1.

JJ Ward and Tayte Smith made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Ward didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 11 over four innings pitched. Meanwhile, Smith pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. That's the first time he hasn't allowed a single hit since back in March of 2024. At bat, Ward scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3, while Smith went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one triple. Smith is also on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last seven games he's played dating back to last season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Gavin Price, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4. Mitchell Stivers was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-3.

Otis was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .423. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Kiowa only posted a batting average of .056.

Kiowa now has a losing record of 1-2.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Otis beat Kiowa by a score of 21-1 later that day.
