Connecticut junior strikes out 32 in softball state championship

Abigail Corris of Foran (Milford) struck out 32 batters Sunday to help her team win Connecticut's Class M softball state championship 1-0 in 13 innings against Woodland Regional (Beacon Falls).

After Foran (28-0) scored in the top of the 13th inning, Corris gave up a double before striking out the next three batters to deliver the win and the title for the Lions.

Putting together a remarkable performance of her own, Woodland Regional senior Ella Van Alstyne also pitched a complete game and struck out 21 batters.

Corris had a no-hitter going until the fifth inning, allowing just three hits on the day while throwing 188 pitches. In the six extra frames, she left little to chance by recording 14 of 18 outs with a K.

For the season, Corris piled up 356 punchouts (No. 7 nationally) with a 0.62 ERA in 180.1 frames. She didn't allow a run in her final 20 innings of work.

Corris pitched in 27 games this season and had at least 10 strikeouts in 24 of them, including each of her final 13 outings. 

Also a weapon with the bat in her hands, Corris hit .333 with 12 extra-base hits this year.



The three-year starter has 693 career strikeouts in 421 innings, allowing just six home runs against the 1,583 batters she faced.
