Baseball Recap: Kearny Comes Up Short

Kearny extended their losing streak to ten on Monday, dropping them down to 1-15. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-3 heartbreaker at the hands of the Hoover Cardinals. The Komets were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cardinals apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2025.

Michael Barbusca was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

As for Hoover, their victory ended a six-game drought on the road and puts them at 4-12. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted since March 17th.

On Hoover's side, Lucian Hura was a major factor no matter where he played. He tossed seven innings while giving up three earned runs off eight hits. Hura also tossed a walk, which is notable because Hoover is 2-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 2-11 otherwise. Hura was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one run. He is on a roll when it comes to hits, as he's now got three or more in each of the last four games he's played.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Abraham Vargas, who went 3-for-1 with one run. Victor Ceballos was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one run.

While Kearny had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
